286: Chip that drives very very old machines. Pre-386.

386: Chip that drives very old machines. Pre-486.

486: Chip that drives old machines. Pre-Pentium.

Atari ST: An old personal computer from the 1990's.

BAT: .BAT files, or batch files, automatically execute a string of DOS commands.

Command-Line: A line of text entered at a command prompt to execute program files and to configure settings.

Command-Prompt: Or DOS Prompt as it's sometimes called. A place where you can type in commands to execute program files, etc.

Download: The process of copying a file from a website onto your computer.

DOS: Or MS DOS is a pre-"Windows" operating system which was purely command-line driven from a command-prompt, with no graphical user-interface. Many programs written for DOS can be run under the Windows operating system.

Emulator: A program that allows one computer to behave exactly like another (usually older) computer.

Freeware: Software that is distributed under the pretence of Freeware is completely free to use but retains the author's copyright. This means that you can't modify the software or re-distribute it for a proffit without the concent of the author.

Operating System: The software that makes a computer tic and allows the user to interface with it.

Patch: A patch is an extra file or files that can be added on to a game to give extra features, levels, graphics, sound, etc.

Pentium: Modern chip that drives the latest PCs today.

Public Domain: Programs released as Public Domain are free to be used and distrubuted without restrictions. Similar to Freeware.

Playable: Not a word in the English dictionary but a word used a lot to describe games that are fun to play, as opposed to being nice to watch.

Shareware: Software that is distributed as Shareware is free to use for a limited period or has limited functionality. A fee is asked by the author for a "Registered" version of the game that has no imposed limits.

Sinclair ZX Spectrum: This old 1980's personal computer is affectionatly known as the Speccy by enthusiasts. You can download a Spectrum emulator for Windows from The Emulator Zone website, but there are other emulators out there if you do a search for "ZX Spectrum Emulator". Spectrum programs sometimes end with .z80.

UnZip: The process of extracting files from a .zip file.

VGA: A colour graphics format that can achieve a maximum resolution of 800x600. All modern colour PC displays now are SVGA and are compatible with VGA.

WinAce: Utility to extract .zip files. Download it from the WinAce Website.

Windows: A popular graphical operating system commonly used today.

WinZip: Utility to extract .zip files. Download it from the WinZip Website.

ZIP: Not to be confused with a Zip Drive, a .zip file is a collection of files compressed into one file. You may need a utility like WinAce or Winzip to extract (unzip) the files to a location on your hard drive if your operating system doesn't support zip files natively.
